Summer In The City

I’m blown away by the fact that I’ve already spent two weeks in New York City. Somehow it feels like it’s been so much longer because of how well I’ve adjusted and how much I feel at home here. I normally adjust horribly with transitions. Every move between home and school was always so anxiety producing that it got to be that I wouldn’t start packing until the very last minute before I left (so sorry parents!). As much as I knew this summer was exactly what I needed, part of me was hoping I could fast forward to the very end, where I’d begin my Master’s in the fall. I’m so glad I don’t have that mindset anymore. This summer, although it’s only been two weeks, has been one of the very best things to ever happen to me. I know I would not have been able to have made as smooth as a transition if it had not been for my best friend Melissa accompanying me on the journey. She spent the whole first weekend with me; helping me navigate the subway and exploring. Together we found the Tommy Hilfiger corporate office, and finally she helped build my confidence that I could truly take on this new adventure.

Living in a new city can be tough, but taking the time over the weekend to explore new places and subway routes, can be the best way to gain familiarity over a new environment. I said goodbye to Melissa that Sunday night and tried as hard as I could to fall asleep in a timely fashion. The night before the first day of work is so similar to the night before the first day of school. I kept playing over and over again the possible scenarios in my head of what would happen and what my coworkers would be like, planned the outfit I would wear, and tried as hard as I could to not psych myself out. The next morning I got to work thirty minutes early and sat in the lobby as all the other interns poured in. Once it was 9am we were all ushered into the auditorium and fed a light breakfast. The beginning half of the day consisted of a company orientation and then we met our department. I’m interning for the Men’s Merchandising department of Tommy Hilfiger, where I assist the buyers with organizing samples and do various data entry. I didn’t study merchandising in school, so most of what I’m doing is new to me. At times it can be overwhelming, but my team is great at supporting me and are wonderful to learn from. weekendoutfitarmcandycentralparkweekendwearkatespade

These photos are from the first weekend of June, after a full week at Tommy. That Saturday I explored more of the city and shot this photos in Central Park with my long time blogging friend, Lauren of “Someone Like You.” I stumbled across Lauren’s blog around four years ago and it has been a daily read since. I emailed her out of the blue once after I was beyond moved by reading one of her posts. Since then we have corresponded and became online friends, but then met two weeks ago in person and instantly hit it off. In fact, this weekend we did another photo shoot and went to church together. All that I’ve experienced has been amazing and it’s only been two weeks! I know without a doubt that I’m meant to be here and I’m so eager to see what God has in store for my life and for all this summer holds. Now that I’ve found my footing I’ll be able to blog more consistently and I’m so looking forward to sharing more of my experiences (and food adventures) with you all! If I’ve learned anything so far, it is; don’t give up on your dream. Little by little, you’ll get there. In addition something I’m really learning is that I am living my dream… everyday. I just need to remember that everyday is a miracle of its own and every 24 hours makes up a piece of the journey.

LOVE,

Blog Signature Hannah
