I had a client recently ask me if skinny jeans were dead. My answer? Yes.
Of course, you are always empowered to buy the clothing pieces you feel most confident in and if that means skinny jeans, then girl buy yourself a pair! Denim trends come and go, but the reign of the skinny jean lasted a long time. We’re finally at a point in the fashion life cycle where women no longer feel confined to buying only straight leg and skintight silhouettes. Hallelujah!
There are few garments as polarizing as skinny jeans. It always bothered me that on some level that the title alone glorified skinny culture and subconsciously alienated women of varying body types. Think about it you often have to quite literally squeeze yourself into these women’s jeans—the tighter, the better! Now though I find not only are women mindful of being more body positive, but we also physically desire to be comfortable in the clothing we are wearing. Over the past year especially with staying at home, we’ve all gravitated towards dressing for comfort, so why wouldn’t we approach our jeans that way?
It’s not surprising that shopping for denim can be triggering for many women, myself included. Although through trying on various silhouettes I personally found several styles that I feel both comfortable and confident in and this is something I help my clients to do as well.
While some may find wide flares to feel outdated and a bit costumey, I love them! They tend to look best with a fitted top or with a blouse that you can at least tuck in. For this minimal outfit, I balanced a pair of flare jeans and a cropped white t-shirt with colorful accessories like a matching handbag and sunglasses as well as a neck scarf to give it some character.
Flared jeans will stick around, but it’s the bootcut styles (with a slight flare but not as drastic) that will continue to be a go-to for many women. These vintage-inspired, high-waisted, straight-leg jeans will hold strong as the silhouette with staying power. Have you heard of the mom jean? Casual and comfortable, these jeans are great for the everyday. Here I paired some from Topshop with a velvet Anthropologie shirt and a pair of Converse sneakers.
