One of the main things I do with clients when performing a wardrobe refresh is explain which items can get the most wear out them. If there’s one throwback trend that does have staying power, it’s the slip dress. The versatile wardrobe mainstay can be dressed up or down, for daytime or date-night, and while you might not think of it as a seasonal staple, with a quick refresher on how to wear a silk slip dress in the fall and winter months, you’ll see that it’s in fact a solid cold-weather choice.
It’s all about layers, layers, and more layers. Whether you’re wearing it over a fitted long-sleeved top, under a chunky turtleneck or cardigan, with jeans or tights, topped with a leather jacket or overcoat, the key is to pile on other pieces until peak coziness is reached.
First, you can layer a turtleneck under a slip… A matching accessory like a hat in the same color is sure to look sharp. For a shoe choice, I opted for a white and black pair of booties because I didn’t want to have the outfit to be too matchy-matchy.
A classic minimalist look is to wear a solid white t-shirt under a slip dress. I see this look done all the time by streetwear bloggers. If it’s chilly enough toss on a leather coat and switch out the white boots for sneakers.
Although not shown, an oversized turtleneck worn over this dress would create a chic contrast against the silky slip sticking out below. Basically, what I’m saying is don’t underestimate the versatility of a slip dress.
