The Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra controls the energy that enables you to communicate and is located at the top of your throat to the base of your neck. When unblocked, this energy is used to express ourselves, our thoughts, and our truths.

The Throat Chakra is the driving force behind all outward connection with others. It allows for use to spill our minds and profess our passions. The energy created from the rest of our bodies chakras help form our perceptions and feelings but the energy created from the Throat Chakra is used to express those feelings to the world. This expression can take the form of spoken words, writing, gesture, or art, It’s home to our creativity that gets put forth in our daily life.

A clear Throat Chakra leaves you in a state of openness with yourself and the people in your life. This also means you’re in a confident and independent mindset, which enables you to become inspired more easily. An open Throat Chakra helps you build better connections with others because you are able to communicate and speak your mind.

A closed Throat Chakra can cause you to feel isolated or inauthentic. To begin, this chakra can become blocked when you ignore or silence your inner thoughts and feelings. It can also become blocked when you take on beliefs and opinions of others especially if you don’t agree with them.

You can physically feel the tightness in your throat when you try to hold in the truth. In the long run, a Throat Chakra imbalance can lead to self-consciousness, timidity, anger, depression, and even physical pain in the throat, neck, and mouth area.

It’s simple to figure out if you’re causing an imbalance to the Throat Chaka. Be real with yourself and think of what you might not be telling someone. Allow yourself space and time to reflect on your actions, thoughts, and feelings to make sure they are true to you. Are you pretending to feel a certain way within a relationship? Are you silencing your voice for the satisfaction of others? Even if you are unsure of yourself, you can begin to unblock the Throat Chakra by sharing your uncertainties.

Get in touch with your Throat Chakra:

Blue is the empowering color of the Throat Chakra so lay out under the sky (which is actually the Throat Chakra’s natural element). On a smaller scale, try wearing something blue or using it in your artwork. The crystals and gemstones to wear and keep near include sapphire, aquamarine, quartz crystal, turquoise, blue topaz, and blue lace agate.

Enhance your chakra balancing with yoga and aromatherapy as well.
Throat exercises, Lion pose, Plow Pose, and Camel pose are good places to start. And whether it’s a candle, incense, or essential oils, breathe in lavender, geranium, and chamomile scents.

There are a number of things to do for yourself that will help open up and improve the balance of your Throat Chakra. Since it is the root of your self-expression get involved in a creativity activity to stir up some inspiration; anything from getting your paint out to writing a long overdue journal entry or just sing and dance to your favorite music! In order to sharpen your confidence and independence, which are also important traits of the Throat Chakra, try taking off and going somewhere on your own for a while. And no matter what you do, it is always vital to own your emotions and practice your truths.

The Heart Chakra

This week, we’re about halfway through our Chakra Series and we’re landing right in the middle of our body’s energy points: the Heart Chakra.heartchakraYour Heart Chakra is an energy point in the center of your chest just above the heart. Maybe you’ve placed your hand here while trying to connect to, or understand an emotional situation, or while explaining your own feelings. This is because the Heart Chakra is where our inner peace, empathy, compassion, acceptance, and love reside. The energy created by the Heart Chakra is our ability to put forth love and balance our lower 3 material chakra with our higher 3 spiritual chakras.heartchakranatureA balanced Heart Chakra means you are feeling energized, open, loving, and loved. Flowing through you is the ability to forgive and have a positive understanding of letting go. This place does not harbor anger but rather pure expressions of abundant love. If you’re feeling as though these emotions are not coming easily to you, the Heart Chakra could be blocked. heartchakra1A number of things could cause a Heart Chakra blockage and it’s important to recognize which events in our lives can leave us feeling this way. Unresolved, damaged family and romantic relationships are some of the most common problems that lead to a blocked Heart Chakra. Continuing with interpersonal relationships, your heart center could feel blocked if you’ve been selfish or conditional with the way you’ve been accepting, loving, or treating others. Even spending too much time alone can close off your heart.heartchakratreeWhen the Heart Chakra is closed off, you could end up experiencing physical conditions such as chest tightness, heart disease, asthma, or heart palpations. Emotionally, you could be experiencing heartache, despair, or no desire for the flow of love – to or from others. Anger, hatred, and lack of purpose are some more extreme signs of a closed Heart Chakra.

An open Heart Chakra is truly invigorating.heartchakraloveIf you feel that your Heart Chakra is in need of therapy, air is its natural element so try going for a walk on a windy day or go for a drive with the windows down to let the breeze whip around you. Practice deep breathing or simply listen to air blowing. A couple of our favorite elemental soundtracks we like to listen to would be soft wind chimes or a breezy forest. Couple this with Heart Chakra aromatherapy of eucalyptus, bergamot, rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree (Sadie’s absolute fav).IMG_1012The Heart Chakra crystals and gemstones to wear and keep near include moonstone, tourmaline, rose quartz, aventurine, emerald, green calcite, and green tourmaline. Hold them to your heart or pair them with wearing something green; the Heart Chakra color. Pay for the person in line for coffee behind you, donate to a charity (any amount is always appreciated), or volunteer practically anywhere. Think about the people you love and maybe send them a little reminder note of that love. Go ahead and incorporate Heart Chakra mindfulness into your exercise routine by doing push-ups, walking, swimming, or doing camel pose, eagle, and/or cobra. The Solar Plexus Chakra

We’ve now reached the Solar Plexus Chakra: the third point of energy in our bodies.

solarplexuslaromaticaTo understand this chakra, take a moment and feel the space between your belly button and the base of your sternum. Think only of yourself and how you perceive yourself. This is your core. It’s a small section of your body but the Solar Plexus Chakra has a big job. Our ability to be confident and in-control stems from this energy point along with emotions of self-esteem and self-worth. Since this chakra is all about personal energy and self-esteem we wanted to explore using natural beauty products, like homemade fragrances and plant centered organic body care.

We gravitated towards this fragrance from L’Aromatica Perfume called Hello Delicious that is jasmine-infused and has notes of kaffir lime. Both of those essential oils support the solar plexus balance by inspiring confidence and stability. In combination in a perfume form it creates a sort of “confidence mist” for the user. A balanced solar plexus chakra inspires the expression of personal energy since this chakra is the center of personal power. Normally people use essential oils for their aromatherapy qualities to balance the chakras, but we think even your beauty routine can be used with intention to be mindful and work to balance your chakras.

When the Solar Plexus Chakra is open and clear, feelings of control, joy, and satisfaction are pronounced. You enjoy your daily work, you feel on track with your goals and aspirations, and the relationships in your life are positive. The Solar Plexus Chakra is the invigorating fire burning within you– if the chakra is balanced.

You may feel trapped as if daily conflicts have more control over your life than your own actions do. A blocked Solar Plexus Chakra can be the result of hating your job or it can be the result of hanging on to relationships that hold you back from growing as an individual. Evaluate the things you do and say in a day, does it really feel like you deep down? Not being true to yourself has a major imbalancing affect on your Solar Plexus Chakra. Are you bottling up things you truly think and feel? Repressed and concealed emotions often go hand-in-hand with living inauthentically. Because the Solar Plexus Chakra is located in the belly area, all of these imbalances can cause physical digestive issues like IBS, nausea, indigestion, and heartburn.

Life certainly does happen and I feel if I don’t conscientiously take part in what is good for me, I’m basically handing my marionette strings over to whatever life event happens next. Since temporarily moving back home after college and taking on more home responsibilities, it’s been hard to focus on my own inner fire. I’m not quite living in the environment I pictured myself in to begin my post-college life so sometimes it feels like I’m simply biding my time until moving day. But viewing your present situation as a block of time that needs to pass is basically robbing yourself of personal growth. Because the truth is you are with yourself wherever you are and that means there is always an opportunity for self-exploration in order to gain control. -Sadie

To begin realigning your Solar Plexus Chakra, start by simply asking yourself questions like: “What is my plan to follow my passions? Am I carving out enough time for my favorite things? Am I being true to myself and what I care about? Am I giving myself enough room to learn more about myself? Do I feel in control of my life?”

auracaciachakrarollonsetStart with one question at a time because you want to be as true and honest with yourself as possible. Mindfully try connecting with your Solar Plexus Chakra by journaling, laughing with others, being honest with yourself, ingesting warm drinks and food, traveling–however near or far, and doing whatever your heart/mind has been set on–like driving to the ocean just to see the waves, or trying out that restaurant you’ve never been to.

Fire is the Solar Plexus Chakra element, which is perfect for this time of year. Try getting around a fire or a wood stove, watch its flames and absorb its heat, close your eyes and listen to it roar. Go outside and get into full sunlight if you can as well! And if you’re looking to incorporate a mindfulness of the Solar Plexus Chakra in your yoga practice try focussing on half lord of the fishes, boat pose, and mountain pose.

 Something we’ve been realizing throughout this series is how important it is to get back to our roots and embrace our natural state. There is something inherently beautiful about moving towards, or rather backwards to the raw, effortless versions of ourselves. With or without makeup, you are beautiful simply because you are alive- the miracle of existing alone makes you a truly spectacular thing to look at.

The Sacral Chakra

We introduce to you today the Sacral Chakra: the second energy point rising up through our bodies.

Place your palms on your lower abdomen for a moment and think about what brings you pleasure and what you are passionate about. This is where the Sacral Chakra is located and it helps create energy in your body that is connected with sexuality, well-being, enthusiasm, and openness. When this chakra is open and clear, feelings of trust, enjoyment, flirtatiousness, and love are pronounced. We feel confidence within yourself and confidence where we stand within your important relationships.

But events in your daily life can block the Sacral Chakra energies which can cause us to feel unsatisfied, bored, and unworthy as an individual and in our relationships. If this energy center is not balanced we can end up not feeling like ourselves and we can become uncomfortable in our own bodies.

This chakra struck me in particular because its imbalance consequences sang a similar tune as the emotions I’ve been feeling recently about myself. I find myself regularly bored and sometimes uninterested in my favorite things like painting and reading poetry. These things aren’t satisfying me at the moment and that doesn’t make me feel like myself. It’s almost like if I’m not constantly trying to remedy my boredom by giving myself more tasks, more options, or more responsibilities I don’t feel like a worthy, employee, friend, or family member.- Sadie

Sometimes we can’t exactly tell if our Sacral Chakra is imbalanced or we can’t spot immediately what’s making us feel like a dull version of ourselves. But you would be surprised by the things you can learn about yourself simply by asking yourself a few meaningful questions. To check in with your Sacral Chakra try asking “has anything or anyone new presented itself in my life recently?” “Do I feel comfortable where I am?” “Do my relationships fulfill me?” or “ Which aspects of my life, if any, am I getting pleasure from?”

Defining some of the causes of our un-fulfillment is an important start to clearing and balancing our Sacral Chakra center. And, there are still other ways to get in touch with the Sacral Chakra:sacralchakrameditation2

The color connected to the Sacral Chakra is orange. Wear shades of orange to encourage the expression of feelings, openness, and confidence. (Experiment with what you are wearing beneath your clothes as well – after all, your sex-drive is connected to this chakra ;)

Buy some flowers, light a candle, stir up a concoction with your essential oils, or eat oranges! It’s all about your body and mind so whatever inspires feelings of enthusiasm, sensuality, and openness within you is best!

The Sacral Chakra element is water so try listening to rolling ocean waves, rain showers, or waterfalls to inspire a balanced energy. To soothe yourself even further, create a Sacral Chakra bath and include an invigorating bath salt. Our favorite is this bath salt from Woodwinked & Co., made from dead sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, lavender buds, lavender essential oil, and vanilla oil. It’s so relaxing!

The best exercise to get in tune with and awaken the Sacral Chakra is dancing! Hula hooping is another fun exercise for the Sacral Chakra because of the exaggerated hip and abdomen movements. And, If you want to incorporate a mindfulness of the Sacral Chakra in your yoga practice try focussing on downward dog and three-legged downward dog. These poses place emphasis on the lower abdomen which will encourage openness, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Lastly, balancing the Sacral Chakra is necessary before intertwining with other people’s energies. Before engaging with others intimately, you might try asking yourself is this person also balanced emotionally, physically, mentally and most importantly spiritually. Most of these questions are answered by eating habits. What you put into your body manifests itself in your exterior.

We strongly believe in living a healthy, happy lifestyle filled with intention and meaning. The journey to embracing inner and outer beauty starts with what you put inside your body and how you treat your body as a whole. Together, both Patricia and I are working on making better health choices and working on practicing mindfulness. We are starting to incorporate more organic and healthy foods in our diet.
